The action in Round 1 of the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series kicked off this morning at the 2014 Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens. Defending champions Australia started their quest for back to back titles with a solid victory over South Africa 36 -0, on Pitch 1 at 11am. It was an emotional moment for the Australian girls, as they wore black armbands and the number 408 written on their arms, in memory of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes.
Australian Captain Sharni Williams said: “It’s great to be back in Dubai, it brought back some good memories being on Pitch 1. It was a great hit out, the pitch is quite fast and it is pretty hot, which suits us.
“But we were out there for Phil Hughes today, we have the armbands on and we did it for him, it was a tribute to him.”
In other matches, France easily accounted for Spain, winning 31-0, defending series champions New Zealand dominated against China, running away with a 43-0 win, USA held out Russia 17-12, England overpowered Fiji 26-0 and Canada overcame a determined Brazil, 26-10.
Canada’s captain Jen Kish, said “It was tough, we were a little undisciplined around the breakdown, but it’s a win and we’ll take it and move on to the next game. Brazil did everything we expected them to, they are pretty good when they are on. There’s always a lot of jitters in the first game of the first Series tournament, so it’s good to get them out.”
Action in the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series continues today and tomorrow, with the final being played on Pitch 1 at 6.30pm. The HSBC Sevens World Series commences tomorrow, with the first match at 9am. Matches in the biggest ever Invitation Tournament also commenced today, and continue throughout the weekend.
