The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens 2016 ended on a high as organisers announced a record-breaking turnout for the 47th edition at the sporting and social event of the year. The event saw over 100,000 fans walk through the gates, 28 international teams in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and HSBC World Women’s Sevens Series and 290 teams in the Invitation Tournament.

Donal Kilalea, Tournament Commercial and Operations Manager said: “We are continuously working hard to improve the event year-on-year and thanks must go to everyone that has helped us make this another record-breaking event on many levels. The atmosphere over the weekend was terrific and we are thrilled with the turnout and look forward to welcoming everyone again next year.”

South Africa claimed top prize in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series last night in front of a packed stadium after they beat last season's series champions and Olympic gold medallists, Fiji, 26-14. On Friday, Australia claimed the opening round of the HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series, beating Russia 33-12 in front of a packed house.

Highlights of the event included the National Day opening parade which was watched by thousands on Friday, the Tina Turner tribute act and the DHL Divas entertainment on pitch 1, the record attempt mannequin challenge, a packed Rugby Village with plenty of activations from all the sponsors and international bands performing at Rugby Rock making sure everyone danced into the night.

Organisers of the event are looking ahead to next year to ensure the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens continues to be the largest sporting and social event of the year.
